Antibiotics Cure Viruses – True or False
When your child gets sick
Whether it’s playing in the sand, petting an animal or meeting other kids at daycare, your child can be exposed to a lot of bacteria and viruses, which leads to him getting ill. When your child is feeling sick, you want to do everything in your power to help like getting an antibiotic prescription from the doctor. In fact, when antibiotics are used in the wrong way or for the wrong reason, it can be harmful instead.
What are antibiotics?
Antibiotics are medicines that fight infections that are caused by bacteria, such as strep throat, whooping cough and urinary tract infection. Antibiotics kill the bad bacteria or make it more difficult for them to grow or multiply. However, when your child has a virus, antibiotics are not effective. Examples of common viruses are (chest) colds, most sore throats or the flu.
Always consult your doctor before using antibiotics. However, if it is the doctor’s call to prescribe them, then you do not have to worry as he knows the best remedy for your child’s infection.
